David Warlick - Right and Wrong on the Information Highway

Information has changed in three major ways:
  • Information is networked - Often straight from author, not vetted
  • Information is digital - Able to change information, create music etc.
  • Information is overwhelming - Be selective about information used, information must compete for the audience – children learning how to communicate compellingly and effectively

Outcome: Students with ethical information habits
  • Information Reliability
  • Intellectual Property
  • Infrastructure Dependability – how to protect it

Problems:
  • educators are unaware
  • students take shortcuts
  • inaccurate information, unreliable, invalid
  • relevantly curious
  • productive use of resources and time
  • plagiarism
o Need to define plagiarism across grade and curriculum
o Teacher model appropriate use and provide bibliography
o Model citation machine and include bibliography on handouts/curriculum resources
o Flickr.com/creativecommons & site individual photo citation
  • privacy
  • bias
  • appropriateness
  • software piracy
  • viruses & hacking
